This photograph of the Bridge and Radar Scanner, taken circa 1969, has to be compared with another photograph in the archive, "Close-Up of Rushen Castle's 4" Gun". Not only has the gun disappeared, but one can appreciate the considerable modifications made to the bridge which, in wartime, was completely open to the elements.
This photo will have been taken when, as Weather Surveyor, the ship would have been holding station somewhere in mid-Atlantic. If you want to know more about life on an Ocean Weather Ship please see Mik Cass's article, "Life on Ocean Weather Ships 1966-1969" and also Howard Cox's account, written from the standpoint of an engineer officer, "Ocean Weather Ships" - both are thoroughly entertaining and offer a view into a world to which we will never return.
