I had previously thought that photography on one of HM Ships during wartime would have been strictly prohibited - see HMS Oxford Castle 2.  However judging from documentation kindly forwarded to me by Michael McMullan, son of Lieutenant Robert McC McMullan RNVR, this seems not to have been the case.

Ratings owning cameras were required to sign two documents, the first as follows:

H.M.S. RUSHEN CASTLE
16/5/1944

List of persons holding cameras with permission on H.M.S. Rushen Castle

I have read and fully understand the regulations laid down in A.F.O.2139/43 and will comply with them. Once a snap has been censored copies may be obtained from any photographer ashore, provided that the original print stamped by the censor can be produced at the same time.

And the second:

PHOTOGRAPHY

Following is a list of equipment which is not to be included in any photograph taken in the ship.

Squid

H/F D/F aerial

253 Radar

242 Radar

Type B Displacers for Foxer

Close up of Rocket Flares on 4" Gun

These documents are valuable because they give us some more names for the crew.  In total there are seven members of the crew mentioned though not all have signed both documents - they are:

Harry R Lyon ERA (signed on 16 May 1944).

Joseph V Walker ERA (signed on 16 May 1944).

RD Ross AB (signed on 28 July 1944).

E Jones AB (signed on 28 July 1944).

White TEL

D Thompson TEL

H.J. Hill ERA

I am not sure the initials attributed to the last two names are correct - none of these are names I have come across before in connection with my researches on this ship.

I have attached copies of the original documentation for you to review - note the little thumbnail illustrations of the various items of equipment not to be included in any photograph.
