To help me when sorting through photograph captions of the ship on this site I thought I would use the National Maritime Museum system (for negatives) of indicating from which direction the photograph was taken.

So ... in brackets after each caption will be P (for Port) or S (for Starboard) followed by a number as indicated in the drawing below. Alternatively a double dash (--) indicates an onboard photograph relating to, but not of, the vessel (e.g. a deck scene).

Thereafter the information relating to a photograph will attempt to include dates, places and events etc… (where these are known).

You may find, as the archive of photographs expands, this system offers an interesting insight into how, over time, the shape of the ship changed ... as an example, enter (S7) into the site search engine, top right on the Main Page
