Mik, Having been stationed on a US Coast Guard Cutter assigned to Atlantic Ocean Station duty in the 1960s, I really enjoyed reading your excellent article about Life on Ocean Weather Ships. One particular incident on Page 6 triggered a memory from my days on Ocean Station Charlie. I was a Petty Officer 2nd Class aboard the CGC Half Moon and stood watches as a radar/wt supervisor on a 4 on 8 off schedule. I had the watch during the incident you described about the aircraft being ferried to Europe from Gander who'd lost his navigational aids before reaching Charlie. I was the one who guided him in on a radar vector to our ship and then sent him out on a radial toward Juliet. (We had to do this twice as he drifted badly off course the first time we vectored him out). My best friend on the shift was a CW operator who transmitted the incident to Juliet requesting 4YJ's assistance. I think it's a marvelous coincidence that each of us contributed to this pilot reaching his destination after his serious navigation problems.
